Tom Hiddleston Wants Loki At ‘Absolute Rock Bottom’ In ‘Thor 2′

Few actors take on the task of playing a super-villain quite like Tom Hiddleston. The British actor approaches his mischievous character, Loki the Norse god, with the utmost seriousness, going as far as writing an op-ed piece defending superhero movies in the Guardian.

Hiddleston has been confirmed to reprise his role as Loki in “Thor 2” for a while now. The sequel, due out next year, is said to explore the other cosmic realms outside of Asgard and Earth, but Hiddleston is much more interested in a more-personal exploration of his troubled character.

At the closing-night festivities for the Tribeca Film Festival, the actor once again proved his passion for his character, telling MTV News, “I’d like to take [Loki] to his absolute rock bottom. I’d like to see him yield, essentially, to his darkest instincts. Then, having hit rock bottom, maybe come back up.”

Loki’s origins, something that has always interested Hiddleston, cast the god as a more ambivalent one. In “Thor 2,” the actor hopes to perhaps find some redemption for Loki and maybe even join the forces of good.

“I think the fascination for me about playing Loki is that, in the history of the mythology and the comic books and the Scandinavian myths, is he’s constantly dancing on this fault line of the dark side and redemption,” he explained. “I don’t know when, but it will be so fun to see him see the light again and be recruited to the good side.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Thor 2.”

NEW YORKThe Wanted made their “Today” show debut on Tuesday (April 24), the day of their debut U.S. EP release.

The fans’ energy was predictably high when the guys stepped outside to the famed Rockefeller Plaza. Before their scheduled performance, the group greeted their devoted female legion of fans, who had made up signs to welcome the guys to the show.

All five fellas happily took the time to pose with fans and sign autographs in the moments leading up to their performance. Then they sang not only their chart-topping track “Glad You Came” but also their new single, “Chasing the Sun.”

“We’ve done two albums so we’re trying to catch people up in America,” Wanted member Tom Parker told co-host Ann Curry about the EP, their first official Stateside release. They then launched into “Glad,” clad in leather jackets and displaying their boy-band bravado.

After they left the stage, they shared with MTV News that they were thankful to all the people who showed up. “It was average at best,” Jay McGuiness joked about the performance, teasing that “Chasing the Sun” was a “hot mess like Lindsay Lohan.”

The “Today” show was the first of many media appearances the Wanted will make on Tuesday, leading up to their “MTV First” special airing tonight at 7:53 p.m. on MTV. They will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to debut the “Chasing the Sun” video and chat.

Immediately following the MTV premiere, the fivesome are hanging around for an additional 30-minute live Q&A session with Sway on MTV.com. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted.

The guys are also one of the 32 boy-band hopefuls in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands, which pits some of the greatest boy bands of all time against one another, until fans vote their favorite group to #1. The battle kicked off on Monday at BBB.MTV.com, with the first round ending on Thursday. Fans can weigh in on the matches on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB. The winner of Battle of the Boy Bands will be announced on Monday, May 7, live on “AMTV” on MTV.

The Wanted are taking over the Big Apple! Stick with MTV News for updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes photos all day. We’ll tag along with the guys on stops like the “Today” show and the Empire State Building before “MTV First: The Wanted” kicks off at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Be sure to tune in for the premiere of the “Chasing the Sun” video and a 30-minute interview with the band!

Frank Mir will now face Junior dos Santos for the belt at UFC 146

  • April 23, 2012 1:01 am

After Alistair Overeem’s license was called into question by the Nevada Athletic Commission because of results of a testosterone screening, the UFC has changed the heavyweight bout at UFC 146 on May 26. Now former champion Frank Mir will face current champ Junior dos Santos for the belt. UFC president Dana White tweeted the news on Friday night.

In early April, Overeem’s pre-fight random drug test raised red flags withe the NAC, who will administer the May fight in Las Vegas. His testosterone levels were well above the approved levels. He is scheduled to to appear before the NAC on Tuesday.

The ongoing question after Overeem’s troubles arose was who would replace him on such an important card. This is dos Santos’ first title defense since beating Cain Velasquez for the belt in November. Overeem earned the title shot by defeating Brock Lesnar in December.

Though a vocal group of fans pushed for Mark Hunt, who is fighting Stefan Struve at UFC 146, Mir was always the best option. He would not have to change much to prepare for the bout since he was already scheduled to fight Cain Velasquez. Mir won his last three bouts, including a memorable submission of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140.

Matt Damon Shaved Head: Fashion Fail!

  • April 23, 2012 1:01 am

Some of the best looking men in Hollywood have been temporarily spoiled by bad hair–regardless of the reason behind the hair-cut. Matt Damon is no exception.   This current look is most likely for a film he is working on, but it is just plain hideous. His hair line is not ideal for that kind of ‘do, and it makes him look like some average Joe college kid. It’s true, sources report that he is working on a movie called “Elysium” up in Canada which required him to shave his head. This isn’t just the average short buzz cut, it looks like whoever did it broke it all the way down to a “0″ shave. That is only one step short of Mister Clean. I think the biggest problem with people who do this for the first time is the “head tan” aspect. They always have a really white scalp, which causes all kinds of problems for their perfect image. Let’s get this movie over with so he can’t get back to himself. Fashion Fail.   Photos By: WENN/David Bodrick/DMBJ

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

  • April 22, 2012 9:03 am

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

April 6: Samsung Electronics Co. says it is expecting a record operating profit of $5.1 billion for the first quarter. It says the result would be a 97 percent rise from its operating profit a year earlier. Samsung estimated that its first quarter sales rose 21.6 percent from a year earlier. More details will come when Samsung releases its full quarterly results.

April 12: Google Inc. reports adjusted earnings and adjusted revenue that beat expectations. Google‘s revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in “paid clicks,” but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. CEO Larry Page called the first quarter “very strong,” but acknowledged there’s more work to do.

Tuesday: Yahoo Inc.’s first-quarter earnings show signs of modest progress under recently hired CEO Scott Thompson. Net income grew 28 percent from the same time last year and exceeded expectations. Revenue grew less than 1 percent, but represented a breakthrough because the company’s revenue has been steadily falling for years.

IBM Corp. says first-quarter net income grew 7 percent, helped by strong profit margins in its services business and strong revenue growth across its software and services businesses. Revenue was flat overall because of declines in the hardware and financing segments, and revenue fell short of analysts’ expectations. IBM increases its full-year guidance to at least $15 per share, above the $14.93 expected by analysts.

Intel Corp. says its net income in the first quarter fell 13 percent as spending on research and marketing rose while sales were flat.

Wednesday: EBay Inc. says its first-quarter net income grew 20 percent thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal business and brisk sales at its e-commerce websites. The results beat Wall Street’s expectations.

Mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. says its quarterly profit more than doubled as strong demand for smartphones boosted its sales; but it expects costs to increase as it makes more chips.

Thursday: Microsoft Corp. fares better than analysts anticipated in its latest quarter, boosted by a surprising rise in sales of its Windows operating system for personal computers

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reports adjusted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street’s expectations. AMD’s revenue forecast for the current quarter was at $1.59 billion to $1.68 billion, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.59 billion.

Nokia Corp. reports a huge net loss, one of the company’s worst ever quarters, and blames tougher-than-expected competition. It has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple Inc.‘s iPhone and handset makers using Google Inc.‘s popular Android software.

Coming up:

Monday: Texas Instruments Inc., Netflix Inc., Xerox Corp.

Tuesday: Apple Inc.

Wednesday: Motorola Solutions Inc.

Thursday: Amazon.com Inc.

Friday: Samsung Electronics Co. (quarterly earnings)

May 1: Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.

May 3: LinkedIn Corp.

May 9: Cisco Systems Inc., Groupon Inc.

May 22: Dell Inc.

May 23: Hewlett-Packard Co.

Inmarsat hands LightSquared a lifeline, hopes to get that $56 million back later

  • April 22, 2012 9:02 am

Image

Remember LightSquared? Of course you do, it was the noble yet doomed attempt to build a nationwide 4G LTE network. Days before Sprint dumped it, billionaire Philip Falcone’s enterprise defaulted on a $56 million spectrum allocation payment to British satellite operator Inmarsat. Now LightSquared’s biggest creditor has offered a stay of execution to give the company time to overcome the regulatory hurdles (we’d suggest praying Julius Genachowski gets another job elsewhere) and get the project back on track. Cynics might suggest it’s only been given the breathing room because it’s not worth being pushed into Chapter 7 bankruptcy, to which we say shame on you, you naughty cynics.
